April 19, 2026: The Season of Easter

Understanding the Season of Easter

Discussion
  • Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday.  Like Jesus told his disciples, he rose again on the third day.  The Resurrection is the most important day of the Church's year and is the fundamental truth of our lives.  The Resurrection is the eternal sign of God's love for us through The Son.
  • Things you might hear and see during the Easter season:
    • Cristos Anesti!  Christ is Risen!  (Greek)
    • Alleluia!  God be praised! (Latin via Hebrew)
    • The tomb is empty!  This is a celebration of Jesus being resurrected and alive.
    • Lilies (flowers): Lilies are a funeral flower because of their beauty and strong smell.
      • White lilies are used in the church building to symbolize Jesus rising from the dead.
    • White Vestments: The priest and altar are dressed in white to symbolize the Risen Lord.
    • The Pascal Candle is lit.   This is to remind us of our baptismal promise and that we are alive in Christ.  It is to remind us to share Christ's light with the world.
  • The Season of Easter lasts 8 weeks. (50 Days)
    • Easter Sunday=1st Sunday of Easter
    • Divine Mercy Sunday=2nd Sunday of Easter
    • 3rd-8th Sundays= X Sunday of Easter
    • The Easter Season ends with the Feast of Pentecost.
  • The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary
    • Prayed on the 50 Days of Easter and every ordinary Wednesday and Sunday.
      • The Resurrection: Jesus rises from the dead.
      • The Ascension: Jesus ascends to heaven after telling his disciples that he will be with them in Spirit forever.
      • The Descent of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit comes as a wonderful gift from Jesus to teach our hearts and minds about God.
      • The Assumption: Mary is taken up into heaven, body and soul.
      • The Coronation: God gives Mary a special place in heaven, crowning her Queen of Heaven and Earth.
  • Handout: Celebrating Easter

The Joy of Easter
(a prayer poem for children)

Oh, dear Lord, when I first learned
about your Crucifixion,
fear was in my heart.

Knowing what they did to you
is hard to understand.
I was worried that we lost you
but trusted, this was planned.

Now, I understand the joy
your painful path would bring.
Now, I know your sacrifice
that we rejoice and sing.

Behold the joy of Easter,
the miracle we were shown.
Rejoice your Resurrection,
our faith forever sown.
